SATA to Firewire/USB Bridge?
SATA to Firewire/USB Bridge?
I working on a SATA raid that will go in a .50 cal amno box. I want it with Firewire 400/800 and USB 2.0. I also plan on putting a network adapter with 802.11g and gigabit eathernet. I figured I could fit 6 and still have room for cooling, power and bridges. I also plan on putting a network adapter with 802.11g and gigabit ethernet.
I was thinking of this http://www.dealtime.com/xPC-Shuttle_POW ... 0_250W_RET for the power supply and the cheapest per gigabyte hard drive I could find is http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... &CatId=139 .
I can't seem to be able to find a bridge card that can handle 6 sata drives and have the firewire and usb on it. The best I could do is http://www.cooldrives.com/cosapomubrso.html and http://www.cooldrives.com/ufsatofibrbo.html. And what was that Firewire/USB to Network bridge thats set up at the LANs called?

Wow! I love the new SATA, but having bizarre issue with SATA
I love that combo card for the SATA.. I may have to re think my next system..
On a similar subject, I am testing the new Share Point Services Package for work. I grabbed a new Dell (we just recieved 100 slated to replace the aging inventory) and installed Windows 2003 Server, IIS, and Share Point. It was up and running for about a week in our test lab and one day we came in and the screen had a message that it could not find the hard drive.
I though it was a hadrdware issue but after some checking with the Dell Diagnotics software the harddrive tested fine. After the diagnostic I re-seated all the cables turned on the PC and walla no problems.
Then a day later same problem... Right now it seems to be a problem with the SATA controller drivers built in to 2003 Server. I have a trouble ticket open with MS and the analyst I talked to eluded to the fact that they have some isses with SATA and 2003 server.
So far though they seem to be working fine with XP and things should be ironed out by the next release.

SATA does not like 2003 Server
Ok I still have not heard back from Microsoft. But I took the machine that I was having SATA issues wiped the hardrive and installed XP service pack 2. The thing has been stable and solid for 10 days.
So for right now it seems Win2003 Server is not liking SATA for some reason...

Maybe i'm being confusing. What i'm looking for is something along the lines of this http://www.cooldrives.com/fi8004toideh.html only SATA and with support for 6 hard drives. If I have to i'll use ATA. I don't thing their will be a huge preformance difference in using ATA instead.

Eek a dangling particple.. err thread..
Ok, I sorta feel I left this thread to sort of die.. First of the year stuff and what not.. So just wanted to say sorry.
Ironically I thought of this thread in work today. I've been looking at some new servers and I was checking out HP's stuff.
Turns out they sell a 6 port SATA card and use them in the mid sized server line. Found this one ironically at Shopping.com....
http://www.shopping.com/xPF-372953_B21
Thus I started searching for the mysterious USB+Firewire+6Port SATAw/Raid Mondo device..
I hate to say it but I don't think its available. I found tons of stuff and the item with the closest match was this..
http://www.addonics.com/products/host_c ... bo_ufs.asp
It is pretty sweet but only supports 2 drives.
I know you want to fit this into a small space so I doubt two cards is an option.
Here are some more links to 6 port SATA options.
http://www.computergate.com/products/it ... d=ASCICS16
http://www.lsilogic.com/products/megara ... 150_6.html
One last thing. In my search I ran across this...
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... =V133-2854
The thing is a monster
It so small! Its so ausome I showed my wife.. She wasn't impressed...
But any way good luck and I hope this helps..

Thats OK. I've given up the ideal of a quick booting, simple collection of different hardware.
Now I'm thinking maybe a mini-ITX/ATX Board (is there a mini-BTX board, nah it would have more power and cost more than I need). Built in ethernet (gigabit if possible), and a PCI card that can have USB SLAVE function (this should be tricky). Altho I mainly wanted USB for older windows machines, now that it will have ethernet that isn't a big concern. Most computers that are still usable (under non-techies care) is new enough to have ethernet. And some way to have the drives be seeable through Firewire. Automatic Firewire networking? And 802.11g. So thats 3 PCI card slots needed (WIFI, Firewire, SATA). Even if I can get a card with both Firewire and SATA, I would be spending so much in this case it would be easyer to expand the system later on rather then make a second one. I could just go over board and get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6816116027. Maybe not with that price, but down the road I could sell what ever card I get and then buy it.
Running a no frills linux distro. Should be lightweight enough for a super quick boot. I don't know to much about linux but would slackware be good?
EDIT----
Curses foiled again. I'm having a hard time find a mini-atx/itx board with two pci slots. I'm also having a hard time find any mini boards. Does anybody have a good place for those. Maybe just a small ATX with only two PCI and no AGP.
