Unreal 2003 Hacks and Protection...

The biggest question we've received lately is the status of Unreal Tournament 2003 (a.k.a. UT2k3) and cheating. This is a very serious issue, since Unreal Tournament 2003 is expected to take First Person Shooter games to the next level of graphics and game play. Epic Games has gone as far as to hire Dr. Sin, the creator of CSHP and UT Pure, to be in charge of the anti-cheating measures going into UT2k3. This will take anti-cheating for the game to the next level of protection. Here is a quote by Dr. Sin concerning the matter in an interview preformed by unreal2k3.com:

"The protection for UT2003 is nothing like CSHP or UT-Pure. With CSHP and Pure we had to work within very strict rules. We couldn't attack the problem using native code (it would limit the game to only PC users).. we couldn't break network compatibility, we had to tiptoe around mods, etc. It's by sheer will of the guys writing it and the admins running it that either protection held up as well as they did.

"None of these are problems for UT2003 and the protection reflects that.

"Out of the box, UT2003 will be well protected. We took a good look at all of the attacks used to bypass protection in UT and have addressed them. We have created a method that allows server admins to dictate what can and can't be run on the client as well as knowing if what's running there has been modified.

"We also made sure that [the] community has the tools needed to defend themselves. This is important as it has to be a dual effort."

Dr. Sin notes why it is so critical that the anti-cheat measures are integrated into the game. When a anti-cheat program is 3rd party, they have to worry about users downloading their code, their restrictions with the game's engine, how to launch their anti-cheat measures, etc. With the protection directly coded into the gaming software, they have full control of the game. They can use any utilities and methods the designer wishes. A 3rd party anti-cheat program can never be as effective as a integrated protection method.

Warning: If you do not play on protected servers with CSHP or UT Pure running, all is fair for cheaters. They can use a number of aimbots, which give them perfect aim, and wall hack systems that let them know where everyone in the game is. If you are a gaming admin, run CSHP and/or UT Pure.
